    Danish resistance K98

    Dear all,

As my membership is needing a recharge, i was wondering can anyone PM me an email so i can post these macro images. My good friend has a K98 which was apparently sent to the Danish Resistance somehow for training during WW2, possibly to build more. He would like to know more about the Rifle, its markings, possible history and with the ope there might be period documents about this actual rifle.

    Regards,

    Pete

Sure. The markings like "K167" and "WaA 211" indicate the parts passed a particular inspection during the manufacturing/assembly process. The "S/42G is two-part: S/42 is the factory code for Mauser Oberndorf and "G" is the year code for 1935. "6865" is the serial number and "k" is the letter block. The rifles were made in blocks of 10,000, so number 1 through 9999, then 1 through 9999 with an "a", 1 through 9999 with a "b", etc. "Mod. 98" indicates the rifle is Model 98, or more specifically, Karibiner 98K.

The finish on this rifle is not factory. The bluing looks like a modern tank bluing with some of the small parts done in phosphate. As manufactured, this rifle had a high-quality rust-blue finish with the small parts fire blued. My guess is this is just another refinished rifle with a story to try and pump up the interest/price.

Here is a link to a matching, original S/42 1936 with rust bluing. You can compare this to your friend's rifle to see the difference:

                .

I am sure the man will be very glad to hear this assessment and to check the provenance!

                Kind regards,

                Pete

If you are interested in learning about Kar98ks, it is worth registering at that Website as it is the best in terms of research on the topic. I cannot post the pictures here as they are not mine to post.

                      Thanks guys,

He says it has been refinnished indeed but this is not news to him. This gun will now go for his hunting rifle. The partisan story he has no reason to not believe given the source of provenance. Nice gun i think,he has no plans to sell it.
