I would guess a strong box for holding money (cash).....Bodes

yes it is basically a cash box.......the US Army was still using these at least 30 years ago. The paint would tell me this one was probably from the WWII period.....typical of what soldiers would be paid from by a pay officer. I would say that small units such as Battalions or even companies would use these in garrison or rear areas as well for unit funds.
