I am seriously looking at buying this rifle and I really need your help. The rifle is not completely matching (only matching items is the bolt, wood, floorplate and chamber) but what throws me off is the laminate stock. I was wondering if this is considered a Russian (yugo?) capture or a German late war rework. Also what is the value on such a rifle??? Around $650 I'd imagine. Thank you for your help, I am looking on trying to get my first K98. Also any suggestions on K98 shopping?

Keep an eye on GB and the other collector sites, the mismatched capture rifles are between $350 and $550 for rarer make receivers.
They pop up for sale quite regularly, and if you have a 03 FFL you're only paying an extra $30 or so for shipping.
Easy to add capture screws and cleaning rod, they sell the parts on GB and Ebay.
Many RC captures have also had the shellac removed from their stocks.
I am not aware of their being a price distinction between RC or Yugo captures, perhaps there is, I don't own any captures so don't really keep an eye on prices.
I would and do, hunt for a little longer and spend a little more and buy a matching rifle or a mismatched bringback, they are out there and will only go up in value.
(But, then I suspect captures will also be increasing in value.)

This appears to be a Yugo re-work (not RC) in very nice shape. The Russians would not have re-serial numbered the bolt handle. Has the seller given you any photos of the firing proofs? If they're not peened that would increase the value of the rifle. BUT if they are peened, you should show us what they look like. Different nations removed the markings in different ways so sometimes it's possible to determine who re-issued the rifle just by looking at the proofs. On another note, the fact that it still has its German code on the receiver is nice, often they were scrubbed and re-stamped. If the barrel is in nice shape I'd imagine that this rifle would probably sell for somewhere in the $400-$450 range.

It might be a better bet, and does it look like a capture rifle or one that was kept in Germany that was miss matched because the barrel, receiver, rear sight, barrel bands, ejector box, trigger guard, floor plate, and follower match??? I really appreciate everyone's help in looking at getting my first K98 (if possible can I get a quick response because on this rifle I have to make a decision quickly on it).Last edited by Stephen Stout; 10-06-2013, 04:33 PM.
