By the serial number, I don't think it would have any later Police marks like Eagle/C or something like that. What is the unit mark?

James, as you were informed on the Police Forum, your pistol (weapon property no.18) was the property of the Kriminalpolizei of the Adminstrative District of Arnsberg and assigned to the detective police working in city III within in the district in Prussian. It was acquired by the State of Prussia and continued in service with the detective police force through the takeover of all the police by Reichsfuhrer Himmler. Your gun can be considered an RSHA pistol, like the RSHA PPs and PPKs, as the Kriminalpolizei was joined with the Gestapo in 1936 as the Sicherheitspolizei, and then in 1939 became a part of the RSHA.

Don, have you found any indication of what city in the District of Arnsberg was numbered III?

Joe, I wanted to confirm that the abbreviation was actually Ar. and not AR. as stated. If it is AR., I would seriously question its authenticity but assuming it is Ar., I believe the marking actually was from the Kripo of the Arnsberg district.

One puzzle is that this is the first instance I have observed of a Roman numeral in this marking. All of the others I have observed have no Roman numerals.

I reviewed Appendix B of HWIS and note that the Kripo of most of the Arnsberg district was under the LKP office in Dortmund (#8 in the list). However, there were two other parts of the Regierungsbezirk Arnsberg that were in the regional court districts (Landgerichtsbezirke) of Bochum and Essen. I suspect that the marking K.Ar. referred to the Dortmund LKP office and any with a II. or III. referred to the LKP offices in Bochum and Essen. However, I don't know which is which.

This gun has a significantly higher serial number than most of the other Kripo M1914s listed in Chapter 5 of HWIS, including those with K.Ar. markings. This suggests to me that it was added to the inventory later in the Weimar era and perhaps it was decided at that time to add Roman numerals to distinguish the Bochum and Essen weapons from the others in the Arnsberg district.

              Kinda complicated!
