    WWII German 9mm Ammo

    Hi All,

What is WWII 9mm ammo worth per box? It’s dated 43 and I guess its for an mp40 because its hotter then pistol ammo.

An average box of 9mm is worth about $10 - $20. How did you determine that the ammo was for an Mp40 and is hotter than pistol ammo? Does it say something to that effect on the label?

      Hi,

I believe is says something on the box that indicates its hotter also the color of the ammo.

      Thanks,

      Bill

        Are they painted/colored black?

Yep, that's what I was thinking of. I shot up a few boxes of those with my dad years ago. I have vague memories of him saying that the special coloration indicated that they were for the mp40. I don't really remember that they were any 'hotter' than regular 9mm.

Actually the black colored one had an iron core. Don't know if it was supposed to be armor piercing or not.I have 2 boxes, one plain and one "m.E. or with iron.

It is not a matter of 'hotter loading'. Mainly in that as the war progressed the germans started using 'cintered iron' composite bullets for expediancy and these caused excessive bore wear. as well in P08 pistols extraction and hence relaiblity suffered greatly with the steel lacquered cases and it was a written order to use reamining stock of brass cased 9mm ammunition with the P08 pistols. Most of the wartime german 9mm will have a blackened bullet to protect the mild steel jacket from rusting before use - as often the alloy plating on them was minimal or non existant. I have shot wads of WW2 german 9mm and found most to have suffered greatly from storage and or time. I have found most of it produced squib like qualities when fired - often not cycling a P38 , and an MP 40 I had at the time. The MP40 had a sluggish go with that 'old ammo'.
I eventually got soem israeli surplus black tipped 'only for SMG' fodder for it and it purred like a kitten.
