    M1 Garand Stock Markings

    Hello,

I recently purchased an M1 Garand from a gentleman who stated he had owned the gun for approximately 30 years. I know almost all the Garands have been rebuilt at some point in there lives.

Anyhow, this Garand is all 1943 Springfield except the barrel which is a 1944 Springfield with a nice chrome bore. The parts to me look like they may be the original parkarized finish but certainly would like opinions.

Also, I've researched all the different types of cartouches and obviously this is a replacement stock but I was curious if anyone has seen the exact Springfield cartouche and if they may be able to date it?

Any/all other information is welcome good or bad.

    Thanks,
    Steve

The M1 Rifle never had a chrome bore. What are the markings on the barrel in the chamber area visible when the op-rod is locked back? You did not mention the serial number range.

The op-rod has been modified, identified by the semi-circular milled out area just above the drawing number. This was done after WWII during rebuild. The original rods had a 90 degree cut in this area which led to some cracking. To prevent this the semi-circular cut did away with this stress area. The stock looks like one of the Springfield Armory, Inc. (the modern one) with the SA cartouche. The original cartouche would have been either SA over E*** or GAW with the crossed cannon acceptance mark.

Well, did the forum censor think the initials of Colonel Earl ***arland were too racy for the forum? They were on a bunch of M1 Rifles. Anyway, here is a naughty photo of the Colonel's initials. The last part of the name without the Mc was Farland.

Thanks for the information Johnny very much appreciated. I kind of misspoke about the bore. I just meant it was bright and shiny whereas most the rebuilds had the bore parkarized from what I understand. It probably doesn't matter anyhow after a few shots it's probably bright and shiny. The serial number range on the receiver is 1,4326** and here is a picture of the barrel date.

I've researched the various stock markings and was just curious if anyone could date the rebuild by the marking. I can't seem to find a similar one.

                      Steve

Actually the bores were plugged with a rubber plug during original finish and any subsequent rebuild to prevent phosphate buildup in the bore.

The original stock for that serial number range would have been a SA/EMc..., and the original barrel date would have been around 4-43.

The stock is not military. As explained it is from the outfit that picked up the name Springfield Armory, and is commercially made.

Thanks again....I certainly would like to find an original WWII stock, but they're pretty hard to come by.

You should be able to find a nice WWII stock at a large show, and it would be worth the effort.
