    Bren Gun, Canadian built 1942

Here's my Bren (excuse the yard, I'll get round to that next year) it's a Canadian made one and this verison I think has been revamped by the Australian armed forces in 1951 ? Hence more of the LMG appeal than a Bren gun proper look (same thing really)

It comes in a large rectangular wooden crate, with a spare barrel and other items. There was also found in it's carry box an Australian army form in an envelope from there armoury workshops.

It's deactivated of course but on this earlier de-ac the working parts move and it can be cocked, unlike the more modern examples which are all welded up solid !

Have you any clues to as what the 'serial' numbers are on it there are some from it's early days then the Aussie revamp, the crows foot of course is as always on it......but what on earth are all the other marks, letters and numbers for.

SLAZ do you know what that stands for at all ?

    Thanks for looking,

    Marcus

You can strip it down this far, the barrel won't come out as it's held in via an inserted and welded pin.

                  Marcus,

SLAZ is short for Slazenger, this is sometimes found on the Australian models. So probably has something to do with the Aussie revamp.

                  Cheers,
                  Andy

Hi Marcus, Andy is correct Slazenger (the tennis racket people) made woodwork for the Aussie brens. My Vickers Medium MG came in 1942 dated transit cases made by them too.

"MA" is the makers code for the Small Arms Factory at Lithgow. (They made my Vickers too) The "52" & "51" will be dates. I will be able to tell you more once I retrieve my book on the Bren Gun from my Dad.

Here is a link to the Lithgow website:

Hi Marcus, the other marks on the gun in close up photo are: the Canadian C and Broad Arrow. The cartouch with the "35" within it is a Canadian subcontractors mark I think? My book lists a "77" and "33" done in this fashion with this description.

By the way, LMG's are not affected by the "new spec" deact rules. Only SMG's and semi auto rifles are welded shut. Oddly enough you can buy a deact semi auto rifle, like a H&K G3, if fitted with a bipod, that can still strip and cock.

                        Cheers, Ade.
