    Enfield m1917

Gentleman, I require your help with the following. A collector I know bought a Enfield m1917 today. He believes that the m1917 should be .30 but this is a p14 .303<O</O
    <O
Could this mean that it is an American made Britisch Enfield?<O</O
    <O
Thank you in advance, If this topic is in the wrong section, please forgive me.</O

Hi there, the P14 is .303 made for the British Army as a suppliment to the SMLE. Most of these were made in the USA as we were too busy making the SMLE; the P17 was the US version made in .30-06 as a suppliment to the Springfield for the US Army.

All Patt'14's and US Mod1917 rifles were made in the US by winchester , Remington and Eddystone ( a remington subsidiary ).
The brits had intended to replace the SMLE in 303 caliber with a higher velocity .276 caliber mauser type bolt action, the Patt'13. When the war broke out the Patt'13 was shelved.Yet needing arms badly the Patt'13 was redesigned to handle the 303 cartridge and then passed on to american manufacturers to make for the brit government 1916 -1917.

In the USA - alot depends on if it is original matching , unsanded , condition of bore , has volley sights , any postwar markings like import marks or WW2 era markings denoting for emergency use .
I have a Patt'14 that is near 90% , mirror bore , beautiful unsanded fatboy stock , complete volley sights , 5 digit serial Eddystone ( ERA ) made. Rifle has the EY stamp on R/S of butt and on siderail of receiver. But no other postwar markings whatsoever. Being I got this from an 8th B17 Crewman whom got it form an old 'home army' sod for some vittles and liquor on the side makes it's history rich for me , even though as a purist of WW1 arms the EY would otherwise ruin it for me.
I have been offered $700 + for my Patt'14 , as it is that nice .Only thing I added was a gorgeous 1917 dated web sling.Oh and can she shoot !!!!!!!!!!.
