I just got hold of a 40 round drum for the Finnish Suomi. Here in Norway the 71 rounds ones are all over, but this is only the 2nd 40 round I've seen. So I wonder how rare they are? I paid about 85U$ for it, is that about fair?

They are rare indeed - I own five nice Suomi Kp/31's but have only one 40 round drum in original condition. If I recall right only about 10 000 of these were made during 1931–36.
Can't say much about fair or "market" value, but personally I would consider <$100 a very good deal if the condition is ok.
BTW, what is the s/n in your drum? -

The serial number is 860, which is marked on both the front and the back of the drum. There is an aditional marking: SL 41 (Which I have no idea what means). The magazine is in very good conditon.

That's an early one then. SL 41 marking can be found from all war-time Suomi mags, but it seems to be most common in those 40 round drums. Unfortunately no historical evidence of its meaning has surfaced, just common uneducated story-telling among collectors.Comment
