    P38 Mauser BYF 44

Hello all.. My first time posting in this part of the forum but not new to the board.

This Mauser P38 has been in my family for a long time and I wanted to just run it past the board. I am no expert on firearms.

    My questions are:

    1) How does know if this is a Police Model?

    2) Is this what they call matching clips? The number on the clips matches one part of the gun but does not appear to be the serial number?

    3) Has this been reblued?

    Any help would be appreciated!

    thank you,
    Scott

    two clips side by side

    One side of gun

3rd Clip... appears to have JC2 stamped on side?

    Scott,
Defiantly re-blue. It is a common military "not police" 1944 Mauser. Only Walther had serial numbered magazines. And they stopped numbering them half way through 1942.

The magazines are Mauser proofed (WaA135) and correct for that pistol.

    Hope that helped.

      Hi Bob,

Thank you for the note. I really appreciate the fast response. I have often heard that "re-blue" devalues 50%? So I assume this is worth around $400?

      Thank you,
      Scott

        Hi Scott,
Your close on the value of the Pistol. Looking at the condition of the holster I would put a value on that at about $65-75 The magazines are worth about $75 each.

And to answer your original question on what to look for on a Police marked Pistol? They would be marked with a E/N (left side) and E/L (right side) slide. The WaA135 is a Military proof.
