MP 44/STG 44 Question

Gents, On the MP 44 gas cylinder cap; there is a short section of rod ending in a ball over the barrel.
Does anyone know what the function of this rod & ball is ?

You use this part when you want to stand 3 mp44 (like piramide)

It's called a stacking hook and is used when stacking rifles upright while setting up camp. Three rifles are placed upright leaning against each other and interlocked by the stacking hooks.
