Hello everybody I am new here but I have taken up thing with going to auctions and draggin these ol k98 mausers home and I guess I need some place to go and chat about these old muskets, anyhow I just drug another home today a CE over 43 and it is a JP Sauer & sohn and Im kind of puzzled by this rifle as it is not an all matching numbers rifle but this rifle just dog gone near appears new and there is not a mark on the boltface and the bore looks unfired as well and I disassembled the bolt just to see the inside and the guts inside the bolt all look new as well the blueing is like new and the stock is not matching the action serial# and it does have a couple lil dingers in it but its in pretty dog gone good condition and the 2 waffenamts stamped in the stock just stand out like neon lights and most generally when I see one of the old warhorses at a sale the stamps in the wood you just kinda need a microscope to see them and the blueing will be worn pretty thin, now this rifle has an electropenciled number etched on the floor plate and down the top of the bolt and its the same # that is stamped in the side of the receiver by the eagle and swastika and then I picked up another one from a mauser collector and its an S42 over 40 which I believe is an oberndorf mauser it has no etched #s on it and its no matcing #s gun either but it does have an original sling in excellent condition and the stock barrel and receiver s match and this rifle looks like it just came out of the box yesterday Ive seen a few mausers down the road in my life and most all of them show there miles pretty hard and all of a sudden I end up with 2 that look like they were just taken from the box and I guess Im just kind of confused about it,I just ordered the canon cameras for dummies and soon as it arrives Ill see if I can get some picks of the 2 mauser rifles up here and thanks for any help in advance Mike.

You should try this website http://www.k98kforum.com. The members can provide information on most any questions pertaining to Mauser rifles. And they have a great photo gallery of rifles.Yes, your S42 code denotes an Oberndorf made rifle but 1938 is the last year they used that code. In 1939 the code was changed to 42. From the etched serial numbers and mismatched serial numbers on the CE43 it sounds like a Russian capture. If you're going to start collecting 98k rifles, I'd strongly encourage you to invest in a few reference books. They can save you a lot of heartache when buying rifles. Be advised though that buying 98k's is addictive. Hope this helps. -
