real or fake k98 sniper

Hi,

I was offered an K98 sniper rifle, but as I'm fairly new the collecting the sniper versions I would like to get your opinions.

Sellers tells me it is a matching number rifle, mount is a civilian Akah just like the scope is civilian or the mount could also be a type III mauser made by Brno during the war but without markings.

Regarding the serial number I'm awaiting sellers respond.

Can a k98 sniper be in a specifik serial number range?

Tom, Appears to be a short side rail sniper......The recoil lug is in backwards, but that is not a big deal.....Let's see what the others have to say, as K98k snipers are heavily faked......Bodes

As Bodes said, heavily faked area and SSR's are the easiest to fake and hardest to authenticate. Hopefully Singleclaw with check in, scope has concerns, looks heavily worked on compared to mount its in but thats not a deal killer, need very close shot of lever area for sure.

lever area? the safety switch on the back of the bolt? or the lever you activate when pulling the bolt out?

The stock is not original to the rifle, a 1940 dated rifle would have had a flat buttplate. Also the safety is not original to the rifle as the key safety was not introduced until the latter part of 1944. Those are just the obvious problems and there may be more.

I'm afraid, Tom, this appears a piece of fantasy. There are too many inconsistencies.

The stock is the incorrect issue for this early '40 issue Erma and so any attestation that the numbers match the rifle are false or the numbers themselves have been forged. Even had the stock been added after issue as a replacement, the cut out for the short side rail mount is nothing like it should be. As has previously been commented, the long 'key' sniper safety would not have been installed on this piece as issued.

I would be particularly wary of this being advertised as 'all matching'. From what has already been said regarding the stock, for the mount and scope to have survived together but have the stock replaced appears unlikely.

It seems as though someone has attempted to recreate how they believe a 'sniper' should look like.

As said in the first mail I'm fairly new to the K98 and when I was offered this rifle I had to be sure as I know from 1903A4 and M1d and M1C... well sniper rifles in general, they are the rifles most likely to be fakes.

So I just want to say a big thanks to all of you... and I will continue my search for a correct, preferably a high turret sniper

Hi,

Where and who offered You this rifle ? as mentioned in another thread, this rifle is now being offered at a local auction-site here in Denmark, and is estimated a price of 2000 euros. I have warned their customer-service and they will look into it, but so far it is still on.
