    US 30 Cal Carbine ??

I was given this rifle today. I do not know a darn thing about these. Is this one a military issue or maybe produced for the civilian market? Can't find any date on it.

Joe,Universal carbines are a commercial version of the US M1 Carbine. They contain parts that are not interchangeable with the military version. The Iver Johnson/Plainfield are made to Govt specs and are much better guns.Your gun looks like it has been upgraded with the bayonet lug,a friend just sold one of these for $250.00 hope this helps.Jay Parisi

It is a post war manufacture Universal piece. This is not a wartime carbine. The wartime makers were Inland, Saginaw, Saginaw S'G', National Postal Meter, Standard products, Quality Hardware, Rockola, Irwin Pederson, Winchester, IBM, and Underwood. One can procure a original carbine still for anywhere from $750- $3000, depending on maker, with the IP and folding paratrooper stock Inlands being the highest. That universal will shoot well - they are pretty fun to shoot- but is not a collector gun.

                Hi Tom
Thanks for the information about the rifle. It was in a group of guns I was given today. That belonged to a late friend of my Dad's. The carbine was the only one that looked military.

                  Joe-

Can't beat a free gun! They are really alot of fun to shoot. If you want to start with a collector carbine, first get Bruce Canfield's M1 Garand and M1 carbine books. After learning the parts, get an Inland, as they are the most common and are cheaper.

I know I'm off topic(not military) with this shotgun. But I'll see what you Guns think about it.

                            Sorry Joe-

I do not know shotguns. I am more into military rifles and carbines.
