Is there a way to research serial numbers of FN pistols?

It all depends on what you want to know.
By the serial number is possible to give you an idea when the gun was made. But if you intend to know to which branch of Wehrmacht it was issued, I'm afraid there is no way to do so.

Thanks for that, would newer versions be easily researched such as presentation pieces that were Nickle plated or is it just the same as for a normal production run do you think?

I think for newer pistol, you may want to try to contact the FN. They may provide you at least a shipping date for the gun and, maybe, to whom the pistol was originally sent.
