    Luger Question

Is it possible for an all original Luger to have Toggle dated one year (e.g. 42) and frame dated a different year (e.g. 41)? (same serial numbers)

      Maestro,

Pretty sure this is a 42 code, 2 digit date gun. Mauser (code 42) manufactured a run of these in 1941 with the (date 41). I'm no Luger collector, but I seem to remember that about 20k of these were made.
      Nice pistol....

"42" on the toggle just means that Mauser made it. Not a date.

During 1939 the Mauser code on the front toggle was changed from S/42 to simply 42.

1939 was the year they changed to 42 without S.

1939/S42 are not so many produced than 1939/42

Dave, actually you have a 1939 chamber date, not 39.
What makes Maestro's pistol special is that it is the only 42 code with a two digit (41) date. The 1939 and 1940 pistols were four digit. As mentioned earlier, after that short run, the code was changed to byf. The byf pistols used the two digit date also.
Although a rare pistol, I would not call it the rarest of the Nazi Lugers. Consider some of the Krieghoff variations or some of the Mauser commercial pieces manufactured during the Nazi period. Although they made more K date Lugers, it's probably a safe bet to say that fewer of them exist today than 42/41 pistols.
