    Sight hood on Sauer K98

Hi all. I have a 1937 dated Sauer K98k without a sight hood. I was wondering if it would have had one originally and that started me wondering about sight hoods in general. What is their history with regard to the K98k? We're they ever factory installed or were they fitted in the field? We're they popular with the riflemen? When we're they introduced for the K98k? Are there different models? Any any other thoughts about them anyone would like to share! Thanks, Bil

If you look at your front sight you will find that it was not cut for a sight hood. Up until 1940 a sight/muzzle protector was used, but it was then decided the spring steel sight hood was cheaper to produce.

      Sight/muzzle protector

What did the correct sight/muzzle protector look like so I can try to find one. Do you know if there were different kinds and which would be correct. Thanks for the help. Bil

This was a thread on whether the one shown was repro or not, but gives you an idea of what they look like.
