M1941 Johnsons are hard to come by. IIRC they also made commercial version which yours could be. Still a worthwhile and interesting rifle to get if you can find one for a good price.

Winfield Arms bought most of the Dutch Johnson rifles, and sold them in the original military configuration, but also sold a sporterized version. The rifle shown appears to be one of the sporterized 1941 Johnsons.

All the Johnsons that I have seen always have mixed serial numbers.

The original finish was parkerized. As you can see, the metal on this one has been polished and blued, removing the original crispness of the markings.

For years, no one would touch a Winfield Sporter other than the occasional optimist who wanted to attempt to return the rifle to its original configuration. This is not a small job, and original parts in nice condition are hard to find. Recently, there has been collector interest in Winfield sporters and their value has risen. If this rifle is a bargain and the bore and internals are in nice shape, then why not?

I looked for a nice M1941 for 20 years or so. I'm glad I waited. You do have to be careful. Most of them out there are or were in poor conidtion, having been throughly worn out in South America before hitting the used market.

A M1941 in nice shape is a joy to shoot. I actually prefer mine to a Garand. One that's worn out and where there's been an attempt at restoration will likely be unreliable and inaccurate. The action may cycle with extreme violence, which it should never do.

These rifles were originally made for USGI M2 ball .30-06 ammunition, and function best when that is what's used. It's all I shoot. Danish military Garand ammunition is the equivalent of M2 ball and works perfectly.
