Please show the mount with the scope removed. If correct it is what they call a cavalry type 99 sniper. Not as many of these are as often encountered. Rubber eye cups always are either gone or like this one. replacements are available in case something happens to this one accidentally. I believe it is related to the rubber being from rubber trees as opposed to modern synthetic rubber that lasts longer.... so its a moot point.

These 4 x scopes have all the windage internally, and distance marks sono outside ajustments are necessary. These in fact are superior over even a M1-D in my opinion, as they are easy to shoot , accurate , low maintenance, and its too bad you are offing it. They are highly desirable , although scopes are not often ever found to match the gun, sometimes they match the scope dovetailed mount. Many times people add the scopes and bases to a regular type 99, so that may be the case .

IMO these were never found with bent bolts like German snipers , so I suspect some person did this possibly post war...no need to bend the bolt at all...as scope never conflicts with the bolt ... so if you can show the mount lets give it a look see. You have to be careful that you hold the spring loaded locking lever away from the mount when rotating it 180 degrees , or it digs into the scope flat between where it is locked, and to the opposite position ,where it unlocks the cam , before pushing down the serrated flat base spring lever to slide the scope off the mount . Says in japanese lock and unlock, but this one seems to be in good shape and hasn't happened too many times . Whats the story if any on what the previous owner knew about it, if anything? Likely 7.7 and usually the bores clean up well because they are usually nickled inside, or some say chromed, but it penetrates into the metal different than regular chrome. I am unsure the sling is for that rifle or not. may be from something else.

                      Sniper

Overall a nice looking rig, typical 99 sniper. Looks like some areas have been cleaned and buffed, safety knob for instance, do the numbers match?

There really is not story on this one. I bought it from a dealer in KY several months ago. The sling appears to have been on this rifle for a very long time. I hesitate to remove the scope for fear of damaging anything so please forgive me for not doing so.

Finally, I'm amazed how clear the optics still are after all these years.

                          Hi Steve,

                          Thanks for your comment!

The numbers match (at least the ones I can see). I agree the safety knob is cleaner than the rest of the rifle, but I don't think the gun has been cleaned or buffed. Granted, I have the advantage of having it in front of me. It's actually pretty dirty which I think gives it character.

                          Thanks again.

I forgot to mention it's double marked on the stock as it should be.

My observations of this type 99 Sniper rifle... I have serial number 6012.. (Called the cut back type...)

Built at the Toriimatsu factory of Nagoya.. It should have a scope marked 99 and a serial number..The scope on the weapon goes with Chigusa factory of Nagoya Arsenal Type 97 sniper rifle 2.5 power serial number 14020... The bolt on type 99 snipers was a special elongated (longer than regular type 99 rifles) turned down bolt... The bolt is of the correct type.. Overall a nice rifle...BILL
