Banner mauser stock carving

Hi,

friend of mine owns a beautiful K98 1934 banner with a strange carving in the stock. It is cut over the Ch.d.a marking. I have seen a tree letter carving before on a weimar era 98 stock. This was " EWB" wich stands for Einwohnerwehr. Does anybody know what "VDV' stands for?

Looks like it was done by hand. Some previous owner's initials?

I agree with Johnny, looks to be done by hand on the refinished stock. What a waste. The EWB (Einwohnerwehr Bayern) markings appears burned into the wood with a metal stamp, at least on the M89 Commission Revolver I have.
