    k98 s/27 questions/help

    Hi, newbee here again
Still looking for my first k98, and i've come across a canidate, but there are a few questions on it that maybe someone could help me out with. It's a ERMA S/27 1936 with what i take is a russian capture x , described as all matching but with the pictures i have been sent most are matching but can make out a few miss-matching ie locking screw on footplate

    1. searched the web and one site says the serial numbers should start from 2695 but this is numbered 709. is the site wrong?

    2. Barrel band does not look like the early h shaped but looks more like a mid war smooth shape with the serial number on, is this correct?

    Thanks for any help

Russian capture k98s are by nature mis-matched. Certainly the front band on your example is incorrect no matter what number it has stamped on it. I would be highly suspect of any Russian Capture that has matching numbers unless all the parts are 1) Correct for the year, 2) Matching in finish, wear and bluing, 3) Have serial numbers stamped in a fashion both period and matching in font and style. I am not sure what the market is like in the UK but in America Russian Captures (RCs) are common and relatively inexpensive at about USD $300-400. Keep in mind that here these are generally personally transferable and fully functional arms (not de-activated). To me that adds significant value. It is sad that this is not the case in other countries.

Also the rifle posted shouldn't have the front sight hood for a 1936 year dated one.
As a RC I really like it as it comes in a fairly rare manufacture year.

I think the biggest concern with a 1936 would be the bore...

Thank you for the help fellow members, just seemed too good to be true. Will keep on looking but at least slowly learning.
