    M! Carbines and Garands

Wanting to find a nice all correct Carbine with early features. I am looking at one on Gunbroker but I want you guys who have helped me many times to take a look before I screw up. It is: http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Vie...Item=309458326. Thanks always....... Jimmy

    Hi Jimmy,
For $2000 wait for a better looking Rifle. I dont like the fit of the wood at the recoil plate, would rather have a type 1 barrel band and a high wood stock. The buggered serial number scares me too. I think it should have a flat bolt and not the round one it has. will check my books when I get home.

    Thats my 2 cents..Mike

Can anyone suggest a couple of good reference books covering the Carbine and Garand in detail. All I have is an old copy of Canfield's M1 and M1 Carbine books and a rather dated copy at that. A good reliable dealer or fellow collector who really knows these guns would be a great help. I have noticed alot of fakery on Gunbroker just to my untrained eye and am paranoid I will make a mistake........Thanks Jimmy

          Viper,
Craid Riesch's book "U.S. M1 Carbines" , the 5th edition is a really good place to start... Bonus is it's not too expensive... It will guide you as to what parts are correct on which rifles.
As with all references like this, there are some items of discourse, but Craig has it pretty well nailed in his 5th edition...
This is NOT a paid endorsement.. But proven to me by much use.

Larry Ruth's "War Baby!" is a huge work on the M1 Carbine and is a must if you collect the Carbine.

The Scott Duff books on the M1 Rifle are pretty good, but not much in depth information.

                Hi Jimmy,
Checked on the serial number for the above IBM Carbine and although the round bolt and type II barrel band are prob. correct...I would wait for a better example.

                  Hey Jimmy,
This Saginaw S.G. does not look too bad. The danger sign's to ME look like the stock has been sanded and re-stamped and the barrel band swivel I would bet to be a fake.

Those two things can be fixed although original high wood stock's and hard to find and expensive. Not sure if the rear sight is original to this rifle but atleast the dove tail where its mounted looks good.

The stock REALLY scares me. It's way too good. I'd say the stock is new production, and freshly stamped. IMHO....

VIPER, I would steer clear of that seller, he seems to have an over abundance of "original" carbines for sale that are obviously reconstructed from re-arsenaled examples.
