    HELP!!! - Browning Automatic Rifle

    Hi Forum mates,

It was offered me a Browning Automatic Rifle (a live one... ). However, I never studied this weapon deeply before and I have no idea about prices or any historical informations (manufacturers, variations, total production, pictures, etc...).

So do you know if there is somewhere in the Internet to learn a bit more about it? I know that there is abook on BARs but have not enough time to buy it!

    Many thanks in advance.

    Douglas.

    Douglas,

Collector grade books has put out a VERY nice book on the BAR, you can find them on the web. I have found them to be be very accurate and with mild recoil, on full auto the rate fire is very easy to control.

      Bar

      Robert,

Thanks for the advice! I must say that I made the deal and got it. This BAR was priced for $2,500.00 (big buck I know, but it was my birthday gift to myself ) which I think it is fair. It is blued and was made during 1918-19 originally as a M1918 by Winchester and, after, (1941 or so), converted to a M1918A2.

It will take one month or so to get the papers and as soon as I get it I´ll post some pics here.

      All the best,

      Douglas.

        Firing the BAR

        Douglas;

I want to second what Robert said about firing the BAR. Fired one on the "1000 inch range" at Fort Devins about 1963. Due to its weight and the weight of the bolt also, I guess, it is so stable and has such a slow cyclical rate that it was a joy to shoot. (But, of course, not a joy to carry over the country-side for a few days.)

It was easy to fire 2 and 3 round auto bursts, and the gun did not go anywhere on the 2nd and 3rd round. The one 20 round mag that I fired on auto, at 1000 inches (= 83 feet) at a target that seemed to be about 2" by 2.5" (my memory from 40 years ago, but a really small rectangle on paper - the idea is that a tiny target at a short range is sort of like a larger target at a combat range - a full-blown MG range eats up a lot of real estate), I got 18 of 20 rounds in it! Amazing! And the first and only time I fired one. I am a good but not great shot.

        Enjoy it!

          Thanks

          Bob,

Thanks for sharing your memories about this absolut classic! However, at first, I do not intend to fire it, since it is a HUGE investment for my collection , and I don´t intend to risk (but the temptation is also huge... )...

I´d like to see some pictures of the BAR in use (mainly in PTO), Could anyone be kind to share some images???

          Regards,

          Douglas.
