I purchased this pistol last week from a pawn shop I happened to stop at. All numbers match and it's in great condition with very little wear and a pristine bore. The magazine is "jvd" marked with rough welds and no waffenamts. Here are some pics.

Price was commensurate with a that of a plain jane P.38 , $600 + sales tax and nic.
But $600 that is a great price for it, I would not try to talk him at that price.

Boy, this presents a dilemma. If a pawn shop gets something at a good price they steal it, but if someone finds something at a good price in a pawn shop it is a good buy? Should Len S have told the pawn shop they weren't asking enough for the P.38, "ask me more"? It is apparent the original seller didn't know what he had, and obvious the pawn shop didn't know either.
There is not a one of us, pawn shops included, that won't take advantage of a good price.

That being said their slack jawed , often drug addled , progeny with no
sense of family or history are fair game.
I give no quarter to militaria dealers , pawn shops and gun shops either.
It's their business to know this stuff and be on top of their game.

I understand what you say, but you should understand where I come from. I am talking from experience that I had with pawn shops here. We ,collectors, do not go around and tell there friends that we just bought a stone mint colt 1911a1 with shoulder holster and guys flight jacket for a $100 from the widow. And that is after the lady asks to be honest with her. I do gun shows and I always have a brand new blue book with me so when people ask me how much is something worth I open the book and show them. And after that tell them how much I can give them for it. Lot of times people say I will walk the show and then come back to you. Two to three hours later they would come back to me and tell me that I was the most honest to them, and they would sell me the piece. So at the end I do not have to worry about the wrath of God

Don't take pawn man's bait too quick. One of the local pawn shops has a regular that
checks the shops to see what they have had come in. One of the owners likes nothing
better than to tell the lookee how cheap he just got something. Just last week a
customer brought in a really nice Model 61 Winchester and a Savage .22 Hornet that
he had just inherited to have them cleaned up and checked out. Both were really nice
and when the lookee saw them he immediately wanted to know how much they
were. Without telling they were only in the shop to be cleaned, the owner told
him he only had $100 in the Model 61 and $25 in the Savage, so at that price
he was taking them home.
