    Luger Unit Mark Help !

    I landed this old soldier last week... Honest 1911 Erfurt w/out stock lug. All matching including firing pin (correct non-fluted) and grips... Only mag does not match.
    Have never seen a unit mark like this, and I've looked in several of my references...
    I'm pretty sure the "E" stands for Erfurt, but I can't find anything on the other letter which looks like a "F", or "E".
    Howz about it George, Johnny?? Got any input.. Anyone??

    First thought would be Eskadron Jaeger z. Pferde 14. But it might be a Ersatz Jaeger unit.

          I was way off base. According to the 1909 Vorschrift f. d. Stempeln der Handwaffen, the marking on your P08 indicates "Etappen-Inspektion waffe nr. 14" (Staging area-Inspection Weapon number 14). The marking is unusual as it is usually accompanied by a Roman numeral indicating the Armee number. The Etappe was the staging area of the forces behind the front lines.

              No problem Ronnie. I found the information from my copy of the 1909 manual I mentioned above that I have had for at least 30 years that Reinhard Kornmayer sent me. But I also found the info in Jeff Noll's first publication on Imperial German markings, but he upgraded that into a hard-cover work. I also found the term mentioned in an older English language work on the organization of the Imperial Germany army. I can send you the title if you wish. I didn't find it in the reprint of the pre-war German text on the organization of the German army "Heer und Floote". If you want I can scan it and email it to you.

              Oh, by the wary, I found it difficult to translate Etappen-Inspektion. That English language work listed it as a line of communications area.
