The need for UN intervention to put things right in this conflict has just taken on a whole new meaning,

              whoa

Forgive them, they know not what they have. If they only knew?
But I guess they have other things on their minds.

To the average "insurgent" (or "freedom fighter" depending on your political point of view as to this conflict), you can bet that they thought these were AK-47's when the opened the container and starting passing them out to the fighters. Maybe some ammo was on hand . . maybe not. In any event, you can bet that they do not have ample supplies of suitable ammo and as soon as the usable ammo was expended, the Stg.'s were tossed aside.

"A rebel with the Free Syrian Army reacts to the sound of an aircraft following an airstrike on a building in the Hanano district of the northern restive city of Aleppo on August 15, 2012. Syrian forces used aircraft throughout the day to attack the districts of Hanano, Bayadeen and the northern town of Azaaz, near to the Turkish border."

This was my first thought too!
Have they been produced postwar, or will they use wartime ammo?
And if so, will they work properly after nearly 70 years of storage???

Did anyone really seriously think the rebels would in first place consider selling the rifles to collectors rather than using them in combat?
