    Gewehr 98

    Here's one that just made me scratch my head....

    I set up at the Grand Rapids gun show here in Michigan. It's the one show where I am actually near the entrance. Just walk in and turn right and I am on the wall a few tables in. Anyway my spot gives me a view of the door so I see all the goodies coming in. On Sunday I see a 98 walk in and while it is being cleared and strapped I am thinking here’s comes something to play with. Just then the guy walks in and turns left! My hopes dashed I busy myself with other things. Then over 2 hours later I see the same guy a few rows over and he still has the rifle! That’s when I start thinking he is way overpriced. A bit later he is walking by with the rifle so I stop him so I can have a look. It’s a 1917 Gewehr 98 nicely marked Waffenfabrik Mauser A.G. Oberndorff A/N. The rifle has a decent bore and is all matching except the bolt.

    So to sum this all up the guy walked in with a rifle and a for sale sign. He walked the entire show (over 400 tables) before he got to me (one of the last 7 or 8 tables).

    So what the hell I bought what he had for sale…







    All for $270.

      Looks like you got a pile of the Turkish 1940's vintage surplus ammo in the deal. I think (??) this ammo is fine with bolt action rifles; I do know that the MG guys have had problems when shooting it due to case head separations, primer seating issues, etc.

      Check the G98 rifle closely for import markings as it may very well be an import from Turkey (just like the ammo). However, for the price I think you did very well.

        I think you did quite well. A Gew 98 in that shape consistently will bring around $500 on Gunbroker. The ammo being the icing on the cake. I have seen just the stripper clips selling for $.50 each.

            I have seen the non-import ones going for well over $600.
            Matching ones go for more than that.
            There was a Sarco import on estand recently for $650.

                As Alan mentioned, are those import marks on the right side of the receiver. Can make out 8 mm, but not much else.

                    Nice Turk 1917 Oberndorf Gew98, I have one myself.

                    Apparently, there is some debate as to whether or not these were made by Mauser and shipped directly to the Ottomans or whether they went to Turkey after the war. Not as cool to me personally as German-issued Gew98s, but interesting nonetheless.

                      I just thought it was a great deal on a nice Mauser made Gewehr 98 with enough ammo to last most of the summer. I was amazed that none of the dealers at the show grabbed it. There wasn't another one in the show for under $450.

                        I would not have thought that the Germans, by 1917, would still have the means to be supplying arms to the Ottomans.
