Who knows. Looks like a sportered Model 1938 Cavalry Carbine, common among examples brought back to the states and use for hunting. The bayonet has been removed and the lug beneath the sight has been ground and rounded off.
Also looks like a sling attachment was added to the barrel. The sling looks to be the correct one for the gun. And If you look closely behind the buckle you can just make out the distinctive magazine. That's my 2 cents.
