    k98 Sniper rifle opinions??

    Hello there,
I may be looking at getting a deactivated K98 sniper rifle, and I have no idea what to look for. I have put a link to one below, and was wondering if this one is an original German example, with a WW2 German scope and mount? If not can anyone explain what to look for in an original K98 sniper rifle? Many thanks for your help,
    Patrick.

I would pass. It looks like a modern composition to me. Every part has different shade and wear of blueing, cut in stock looks fresh and the rifle is 1943 dated. Short side Rails were made till 1943, but last versions were improved with extra pins for more stable attachment. Rifle itself seems refinished. Hard to tell from photos, but it may be Russian Captured rifle.
Short Side Rail snipers are scarce and very desireable. Be carefull. Maybe "Single Claw" will answer. He is very knowlegable in German sniper subject.

I suggest that you study the subject prior to look for a sniper riffle to buy.
This is a very hard subject and an original german sniper riffle is very expensive.
Unless you want to specialize in the subject and decide to take some time and some big money, your chance to succeed are very close to zero...

Maybe you should consider to buy a look alike sniper riffle ?

You would need many more pics, good pics to tell much. Could be an RC. What is the asking price? German snipers are a minefield, lots of cobled together fakes. Do a lot of research if you want to get into this field.

Hi Wilhelm, yes I think research is what I need to do now. The asking price is £1800 which I think would be cheap for k98 sniper rifle? I may be looking at getting a k98 zf4 sniper rifle, can anyone help me with what to look for in a good example, and a little bit more about them, makers/dates, use etc? Many thanks, and much appreciated, Patrick

Hi Patrick, do you want this rifle for a display or collector value? Here in the US deacts are not common as we can have live weapons. To me 1800 Pound Sterling for a rifle that does not shoot is way high. I do not understand that market, are they collectable in the UK? Mauser prices have gone sky high in the last 10 years over here. Un-messed with snipers are out of reach for most of us now. You had better do your homework. You may want to check out WW2Weapons Forum. There are some great guys with lots of knowledge there. Good luck with your hunt.

I agree with everything said above. And having said that, I also would pass on this rifle.

In the uk deacts are expensive as they start life as fully working guns, then they have to be deactivated at whatever that costs, then it needs to be sent away for it's Deactivate certificate which is around £50. So they generally workout more expensive than live fire weapons. You can own a working k98 in the uk, I have one myself, but you do need a firearms certificate from the local police force, who will require stringent requirements before the licence is granted, I personally thinks it's worth the hassle as deacs are really just large paper weights or wall hangers. Better to get on the range and fire them.

Patrick, once again, 1 pic is not enough. Such weapons may have 30 or more stamps and marks that all need to match to bring top prices. There need to be detailed, good pics of all #s and pieces to verify the seller's claims. 1850 Pounds is almost $3000. That can get you a live G43 over here. I concur with Jenko, jump through the hoops and get a live fire rifle. It will be worth it in the end. Just my 2 cents.

I agree with Wilhelm. Snipers are tricky and very little details, marks and how they are applied can determine if the rifle in question is real or not. On the other hand real snipers seldom appear on the open sale, on websites or auctions. Sometimes they do however. Mostly they are being sold between collectors on the phone call. I have been searching for them for a few years and acquired only two so far. If they are offered for sale, here in US they go for 8,000 to 20,000$ depending on condition and variation. Short Side Rails are in the upper range.
Definately you need lots of detailed pictures and if not sure post them to get opinions to be sure.
