    Mauser C96 Prussian Contract

    Hello!

I have a recently come across an opportunity to acquire a Mauser C96 Red 9. It comes with a matching stock, spare magazine spring, cleaning rod, and leather rig. The serial number is 15340. When I called the seller, he stated it was mechanically operable, the rifling was strong, and the bore wasn't corroded. There is some holster wear on the barrel and the finish is worn by the hammer. There is no surface rust or pitting. All leather straps and stitching are intact. I wanted to ask the forum if you see anything that is concering (I know components to these firearms are heavily faked) and what you think it would be worth. Any comments/opinions/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

    Matt,

Regarding the gun, I see nothing wrong: textbook Red Nine, with all the features expected to be found in such variation. The hammer is not worn: it was left "in the white" (just like the slide and inner parts) as a factory configuration. Nothing wrong there.

Ask for confirmation about the serial number inside the wooden grips. The stock seems to have been modified in order to attach a suspension device, which would not be original. I will decline to do any comments on the leather harness, as I'm not into this subject.

    Douglas.

I agree with the above assessment. I think that the harness looks original from the photos...it is a low number gun and would perhaps track with the 1916 harness.

I also agree that the hanger was added. I could not say when, but it looks like it could be of the period too me. There are a number of period photos showing German soldiers wearing these stocks suspended from shoulder straps and even improvised belt loop(s). Either method would have required something similar to what is on this one to have been installed.
