bought these at an estate yesterday.

the sellers father was a gun collector... so I have no history behind the stuff.

There is a really nice M-1 carbine. not sure when it was made since I don't see a date on the barrel. It's close to new... so it might be post war? I see the word Winchester and Standard Products.

also... a BYF 43 P-38 with an extra set of grips. looks like someone tried to make their own political leader grips? Can't believe someone ruined a nice set of grips!

and finally.... a Japanese paratrooper rifle? the stock was modified.... but for $75 bucks... I figured it's still a good deal.

Your M1 Carbine was probably manufactured in mid 1943, and appears to be a post WWII rebuild. It shows a mix of parts that is common to a rebuild, but also shows some parts that would have been replaced in rebuild. Someone may have started a restoration and never competed it.

The Winchester barrels were only dated on the very early examples.

This is an original Winchester near your serial number showing the early sight. I have not function fired this one either.

The eagle/swastika rivited onto the original P.38 grips looks like something done on occupation duty, post-May, 1945, by a GI who was passing time waiting to leave the ETO and go back home. You see lots of this type souvenir "enhancement" that was done by GI's, adding various German military/political insignia to holsters, grips, stocks, etc.

To me the eagle/swastika looks to be aluminum; with the design engraved thru the black painted or anodized finish on the aluminum base metal. In fact, this looks vaguely like the eagle/swastika that you see on Kriegsmarine optical equipment (particularly binoculars). I wonder if the vet pulled apart a pair of KM binoculars to pry off the eagle/swastika, trimming off the "M" portion and using the remainder to jazz up his souvenir pistol's grips?
