    What is this Mauser?

    Hi guys,

I am not a firearm collector, but I am a WWI enthusiast.

Can you help me here? What do I have here? Is it complete and original?

Lots of photos to load, so I will drop a note when I'm done.

It's called a C96, often referred to as a "Broomhandle Mauser". Yours looks to be in .30 Mauser caliber (9mm versions have a large 9 carved into the grips). Be advised that when you attach the stock it becomes a dreaded "short barreled rifle" and you are subject to serious penalties as it will be in violation of the National Firearms Act.

In the U.S.A. it is not illegal to attach an original or copy of an original shoulder stock to a Broomhandle. While it is not illegal to attach a shoulder stock to an Artillery or 6" barrel Navy Luger, it is illegal to attach the same shoulder stock to a 4" barrel Luger.

The Broomhandle was originally issued with a shoulder stock as was the Artillery and Navy Luger, but the 4" Luger was not issued with a shoulder stock.

Johnny is right. Thank goodness we're past that dreaded shoulder stock issue. At one time it was legal to own a pistol slotted for a shoulder stock or a shoulder stock but not both. This resulted in many Luger shoulder stocks have the attaching mechanisn disabled. Worse yet; Some guys ground the attaching metal on the backstrap of their Lugers off!
