    MG34 anti aircraft tripod Dreyfus?

I wonder if anyone can help? Was the anti aircraft tripod for the Mg 34 called a Dreyfus? I am looking at buying one, could you anyone tell me what to look for to indentify it as German WWII issue and any pitfalls i might come across in buying one, bits that go missing etc. Thanks Tim.

Hi Tim,I don't know what the availability is in England but these are very scarce in the US.

I just finished restoring a Dreifuss dating from approximately 1936-37 (judging from the type Waffenamt stamps it has).

There were two basic types of wartime AA tripods. The first was made largely of a light magnesium alloy the Germans called "Elektron." It's fairly easy to spot as such and will be marked on the tripod head with either a three letter code (usually CNX) or in the case of this early one, "S64". The fittings will be steel, originally blued (apparently) and also waffenamt marked.

There should also be a serial number and one or more Waffenamt stamps.

I wish I could post photos of mine but as yet I have no digital camera equal to the task. This is next on my agenda so perhaps in the next few days I can send you photos.

The second type is made almost entirely of steel tubing and stampings and strongly resembles the postwar tripods currently available cheaply almost everywhere for the MG42.

If you have an interest in the MG34 or MG42 and related ephemera I strongly suggest you purchase a copy of Folke Myrvang's omnibus book on the subject published by Collector Grade Publications. As with most such references, it is well worth the price!

Hopefully soon I can post photos of my tripod which should help you.

    Viel Spass,

    Harry

I really should just stay out of this, but I don't see anything wrong with Tom's post, except perhaps a PM may have been more appropriate. I've bought a sling from him before; he is quite reputable and credible with his sales. Myself I have been looking for a tripod for the '34 for some time, and appreciate any information I can get.
I really hope we can all post without being insulting, makes for a much more pleasant site. I know of one popular site that is so full of flaming that as a collector I just can't take it seriously anymore.
Anyway, the '34 tripods are scarce as he!! for sure, looks like I'll have to dig a bit deeper.
                take care,
                Joe

                        Tim,

Did you see the 2 AA tripods at Beltring? I didn't look for stampings, but they had been repainted, they were £60.00 and £90.00. If they are still there on Sunday i'll have a better look.

                        Cheers,

                        Craig.

Craig, i couldn't make it Beltring, how was it? A friend was down there with his shopping list which i added a few items too. The tripods sound cheap at £60 and £90, but there are be bargins to be had. Can you give us a quick review of the show when you get back. Cheers Tim.

                              Hi Tim,

I had a good look at all of the tripods, none were pre 45, hence the price I guess.

                              Cheers,

                              Craig.
