SS K98K - lots of pics - anything special?

This was a birthday present for me a few years ago. Came from an estate auction of a veteran. Cost $125
I always wanted to share these images with people who are interested or research these and finally found this forum, so enjoy the photos and please share any info you have. All I know about this historically is what can be found in The Backbone of the Wehrmacht book.
    -No import marks
-All numbers match except for cocking piece and firing pin but they match each other
-ugly varnish probably applied by Vet years ago, but if not done the skull on the grip would most likely been lost over the years

I believe the receiver is a WWI GEW 98 Spandau - contract from Belgium (Knight with Lance proof)

I would really like to know what the remains of the scrubbed writing is on the left side of the receiver.

looks like an early rework , regarding the stock. my mauser dated 1934 has the same.
I do not recall the "date " of the SS2 skull waffen amt.
good honest SS k-98k. thank you for showing us.

If there is anyone out there familiar with WWI GEW98s, I would really like to know what the remains of the scrubbed writing is on the left side of the receiver. Also some more background on the Belgian contract Spandau receivers. Thanks for the help!

The scrubbed writing on the left side of the receiver is the remnants of pre 1939 German Proof law commercial nitro proofing. With the additional 41 date commercial proofing on the barrel (the 141 under the eagle on the bottom of the barrel is the proofing date, January 1941), I'd say your rifle was reworked at least twice. There is a good book that describes these markings, "The Standard Directory of Proof Marks" by Gerhard Wirnsberger.

The SS deaths head rifles were converted G98 rifles, as is yours. The markings on the receiver were removed as at that time the SS was no governmental organisation. The left "scrubbed writing" are firing proof, they used to mark with how many powder etc. they were proofed - that's why there's such a lot on the receiver. I've handled several other K98k with SS and similiar markings on the receiver. The Crown with N means "Nitrobeschuss" (nitro powder).

Check the stock for plugged holes where the original G98 stock would have had a swivel.

€dit: Where did you see the '41 markings? Kept looking but I didn't found them..

On the photo showing the barrel markings, under the woodline. There is a "141" marking under the Eagle N commercial nitro proof. This photo is in the link.

Thanks guys for all the info so far. I understand the Nitro proofs eagle and N with crown. Is the little church looking stamp also a firing proof? And what about the "St.." and "14?an" next to all that? Does anyone have photos of the same or similar markings that are not scrubbed so I can see what it looked like?

In the title you ask if it was anything special? Well to me its special enough for you to double your money on me "hint hint". Just drop me a pm and I will let you make some money off of me on it. And if you can't tell I do like your rifle sir. And I would be a very happy proud man to have her in my collection. So when you get tired of her she is calling my name.

dag001, Thank you! That is what I was looking for. Its one thing to read a description of what should be there but when you see a photo it all comes together. I've never seen a marking like that before
