The price afraid me too, but that's what they are worth in the US, big demand and small supply.

PS, How much do MP 40 magazines sell for in Luxembourg ?

      John,

If you like, you can do a Freedom of Information Act request and get copies of all prior registration paperwork for your gun. While redacted of names and other personal identifiers (due to applicable taxpayer confidentiality statutes), you will be able to see the types of registration and transfer forms used and see the dates of registration and transfer.

As others have mentioned, this gun has probably been with the PD for many years (likely 40+ in my estimate). As to how the PD got it, to me the most likely scenario is that it was seized from and/or surrendered by a vet (or vet's family) who did not want to have one of those "illegal" machineguns. It could have then been registered to the PD during the 1968 amnesty. Also, if registered on a Form 10 prior to April 1, 1974, BATFE will consider the gun fully transferable to individuals. Either way, I think your gun has likely been sitting around the PD's inventory locker for almost a half-century.

NFA Amnesty? This has to only apply to LE I imagine?

No it was for anyone. Last one I believe was 1968.... probably won't see another.

Actually there may be another amnesty. A couple of congressman have been pushing for one for the last 5 years. It would be only for WWII vets and their heirs who still have WWII machineguns or NFA items they would like to register. The bill was introduced last year as H.R. 420—"Veterans Heritage Firearms Act". Of course the gun control advocates oppose it as well as the BATF which says it would interfer with their prosecutions. It only makes sense to get those items out of the closet and onto the NFA register where people can enjoy them.
