    Ppk #396417k

    Hello guys,

The grips are the early type but the sights both front & rear are they correct for this serial number range in line with the manufacturing of the slide, or have they been changed as some point, late 1942 or early 1943 production?

    Thanks

Can anyone date this pistol more accurately than late 1942 or early 1943?

Scott, I don't think you'll be able to pinpoint it any closer than late 42, early 43. The sights are the type seen on later PPK's (Dovetail blade rather than machined as part of the slide) and would certainly fit with 1943.

Sights are fine. I show 1943 PPK production started @ 400,000K'ish. So that puts 396417K production date at November 28 1942. I'd say early in the first shift after lunch about 2:45 or so.

Wow very good Andy.. can't you pinpoint it anymore accurately. Theirs a full 60 seconds before or after the 2:45

I forgot to ask, is it an alloy frame?

The actual frame is no magnetic, only the slide and trigger guard attract a magnet.

I thought from the wear that it might be alloy, it's hard to tell in a photo sometimes. Hard to find and desireable variation. Out of my 96 PPK's I believe I have only 3 alloy's. It's a keeper. I'd add it to the pile if it's for sale.

I have been trying to hit triple digits for a couple of years. I am real particular about what I add now, I pretty much only look for the odd variations anymore. Unless a scraming deal comes along of course. I did pick up 3 in Tulsa last month, DRP, WaA359 and a screaming early commercial with undamaged grips and FE mag. for $425. Hell I get $250-350 for mags. and $275-300 for grips alone so it was a no brainer.

What is required to do to a pistol there in England to make it a Dewat?

It's been mentioned many times but you guys really have good pickings for original firearms, direct vet rigs untouchted since the war, PPK with capture papers it's stuff that we dream of over here..

A dewat is not pretty Andy, but you can still cock and dry fire the pistol.

Current legislation requires that the barrel has a slot cut into it, the rifling is removed from the barrel apart from the last cm or so, a hardened pin or rod is welded in the chamber entrance, the locking lugs on barrels are ground away, the feed ramp is milled back, the frame rails are weakened, the ejector is ground back, the locking lugs inside the slide are ground down, the breech face is ground back and the firing pin is ground back or at times removed.

WOW that seems like a lot of work to dewat a gun.

Wouldn't after maybe cutting the receiver and ditching it the parts be worth more than what the hole gun is worth after the time and trouble to dewat it? After a dewat numerous parts are no longer useable in any gun and therefore worthless. I would think ditching the receiver and sell the parts would be more profitable, less time consuming and have no laws to deal with in selling parts.

What does a dewat PPK cost?

With the restrictive laws in the UK why would one want a pistol in their collection that has been mutilated?
