    P.38 magazine question

    I went through my extra P.38 mags. and found two that are P.38v marked. What is the little "v" for? Thanks, Van...

    It is not known for sure. Some say it stands for Verbessert or Verlängert. I think these mags came in 1943.

    There's someone in this forum who knows a lot about P38's and their mags. He helped me several years ago when I bought my byf43 P38. Unfortunately right now I can't recall his name. Sorry.

        Feb. 43 there was a design change with 2mm being added to the height of the stamped steel magazine housing. Those magazines manufactured with this change by Walter and Mauser have the "v" marking.

          CH47 is correct. There were probably only three makers of P.38 mags, Mauser, Walther & jvd. Mauser and Walther placed the "v" on their mags when the change was made. jvd mags are never marked with the "v" because the change was already in effect when they started making mags with the jvd code on them. There were also Spreewerk mags stamped with the E/88 but some feel those were made by jvd before they became an independent maker. That fact is still in question.

                They stamped a letter U for when they quit tempering the feed lips
                later into the war.
