    41 Thompson Savage smg ..

    Hi all ,,

I recently added this nice Thompson smg to my small collection .. As far as I can make out this one was produced sometime in mid to late 1941 for Auto Ordanance by Savage Arms ..

I would love to see images of Thompsons in other collections, so lets get out those camera's and see if we can get another good thread going

    Cheers
    Paul l k.

Needs a drum and a vertical foregrip IMO...but then I have always been partial to the gangster guns...

            Very nice M1928A1 !!
One of the last made, I think, as in 1942 they updated to the M1 model.

The Thompson posted is a fairly early example of a 1928A1 with the finned barrel and Lyman adjustible rear sight. The decision was made early on to dispense with the vertical grip as it was too prone to breakage. The Lyman sight and finned barrel were eliminated to cut costs and speed up production. Many early Thompsons were issued with 50 round drums which were also discarded in favor of a new 30 round stick mag. to suppliment the 20 round mags already in use.
The drums were for one thing heavy adding about 3 pounds to an already hefty 11 pound gun. Additionally; The drums rattled in use which is never a desirble feature. You have a very impressive display there. I would suggest you buy a copy of "American Thunder" by Frank Ianamicco if you are interested in a comprehensive history of the military use of the Thompson.
You can get far more information on the Thompson SMG forum than I can provide here:

As an aside: I met one of your fellow Countrymen at the Small Arms Review(SAR) in Arizona a few years back and I envy your machine gun possession laws. Do you know if your Thompson is one of the unissued Russian examples?

James I have been trying to track down a copy of Frank Ianamicco's "American Thunder" but sadly it is out of print and places like e bay are asking horrible prices ,, I have asked for help on finding a copy from sites like the forum you mentioned, but so far no luck ,, I can only hope someone out there will offer me one at a fair price , I will keep trying ..

I will see Frank at the SAR the 1st week in December and I'll ask him if there's an extra copy available anywhere.

If he did still have a copy could you please ask him if he would be kind enough to ship to NZ using a more standard method,, They had a copy in stock recently but unfortunately shipping to my country was listed at $150. USD ! ,, I did send them an e-mail but I never received a reply ,,

Paul- the book you really want is by Tracie Hill, the exact title eludes me at present but it is an exhaustive tome on the TSMG that will provide you with far more pleasure and info than the title you currently desire. Tracie is also the president of the TSMG club and lives in a town in Ohio where I once resided. A copy of this book should be high on your list of items to search out. Its a very fancy book that cost 100.00 or so when out in print, not sure what a copy goes for these days.
                      Best of luck,
                      Eric

As a general book on the Thompson SMG; Tracy Hill's is a good choice. It covers the early Colt production as well as the later military production by Savage and Auto ordnance.
However; Frank Ianamicco's book is devoted to extensive coverage of the military production examples like the one Paul owns.
IMO : Neither book is a bad choice it just boils down to what type of detail you're interested in.

Yes, you are correct. Both would make a wise choice...too bad they are so expensive.

Again thanks to Jim and ValhallaMilitaria ,, I will add Tracy Hills book to my wish list but from what I can see so far the prices being asked for the Tracy Hill book well exceeds Franks by quite a sum ! ..

                            Happy Thanks Giving Day

I had an inscribed copy of Tracies book...some letters from him and we spoke on the phone once or twice IIRC, nice guy and he was on the History Channel's Tales of the gun back when they actually had shows about history on. That segment on the TSMG is worth a look if you can find it.
