I have a chance to buy a 1903 A4 Remington sniper. My question is it has a Lyman Alaskan scope and not the Redfield mount and M73 B1 scope the serial # is 3416740 which I believe puts it in the correct range .i think both scopes were accepted but i thought way they were configured from the factory were with the Redfield set up and the Lyman was the accepted field replacement? Not my specialty so any input is appreciated. Thanks

The 03-A4 was originally issued with the M73B1 Weaver scope, and the Redfield base and rings were also original issue. Even if the scope was changed, the Redfield base was always retained. You did not mention if your scope was the M81 or M82 Lyman military scope, as over the years many commercial scopes have found their way onto the 03-A4 rifles as virtually none of the rifles were sold by the military with the scope attached. Also, the M84 scope in addition to the M81 and M82 was used on the rifle in post WWII rebuilds.
This was the original scope set-up on the 03-A4.

The military version was marked with M81 or M82 markings, where the commercial version was marked Lyman Alaskan.
The serial number is in the correct range, and is something under 3300 later than the rifle I show. The markings on the 03-A4 receiver are split so that they can be seen with the scope base in place. The maker and model number are on the left side of the scope base, and the serial number is on the right side. The 03-A4 receivers are marked 03-A3 so that any that did not make the cut for the sniper rifle could be converted to the standard 03-A3 rifle.
