    G98/40 dated 1941

    G98/40 dated 1941

    Metal parts are painted, which seems unusual,
    all numbers are matching;

    Has anybody already seen a painted G98/40 ?

    Thanks

              Black paint could denote a russian capture rifle and painted black for storage purposes...though it seems this one has no russian capture markings.
              Did you have a look of what's beneath the black paint?

                Looks like the metal is in poor condition due to rust, so someone painted it black to try to make it more presentable.

                What is the deal with the barrel just below the front sight? Are chunks of metal milled out of the barrel?

                      What about the French? I have a Tir Reduit made during the Vichy rule that is also painted black. Or could it be post war use by the French?

                        I don't know about French painted wappons but I'm not so much into guns,
                        however, it seems that there where also period painted MG's,

                          I dunno about the french and the painting of their weapons, but IMO it's more plausible that it got pitted stored in some barn or attic somewhere, and it was decided to spruce it up a little bit as a wallhanger.

                            did not the french paint their weapons they used in indo-china, jungle environment ?
                            the common wealth painted some for jungle use in ww2 , like my jungle carbine.

                              In my opinion, the black paint is to make it look better, because heavily rusted, as said previously by Alan.
