Ammo can ID

I picked up some, what I thought were German ammo cans. Got them home and started looking at them and now I am not sure.

They seem to be a cross between a WWII US .30cal and a WWII German ammo can. Flat embossed lid with a handle that allows two cans to be carried like a German can. But the latch is more like the US WWII .30cal style except it has a little lock slider that keeps the latch from popping open. Lids are not removable.

Still cleaning the rust off of them so no markings that I can find as of yet. Pictures will be forthcoming once I dig out my camera. I could not find anything like them on the net either.
