Walther & P 38

Hello all,

I have these and will post better photos shortly but wanted to get any additional information. The numbers match on the P 38; it has two clips. The Wather has only one clip, but has the holster for the other clip. The Walther gun has some tiny rust spots and I was told they can easily be removed by using the finest steel wool and oil without doing any damage to the bluing. The P 38 has a small chip in the Bakelite handle, about pencil eraser size, just below the area of the knurling, where you pull the slid back.

I am a novice gun collector and know very little about firearms and basically I know nothing about these guns so would appreciate some information. Can anyone help me establish a rough estimate for these?

Pistols

Need better photos to make a determination, close ups etc. Two things matter w/ weapons, all matching serial numbers, and original finish. P-38's were the replacement for the Luger, completely different design, they share the same cartridge and that is about it.
The PPK looks nice, but again, need closeups of the serial numbers etc, all markings.

For example a AC40 code P38 is thousands of $, while and AC44 (walther code) is in the hundreds (550-700$ depending upon varying factors).

PPK's that are standard army issue, etc, are worth money m(1000$ give or take), Rarer variations command much more $$$.... RZM's, DRP marked, etc....

Welcome aboard! As Chris said above we need more pictures to tell'ya exactly what you have.

For instance, there were three different makers for the P38 pistols, each using its won secret code and serial numering methods: Carl Walther Waffenfabrik (codes "480" and "ac"), Mauser Werke (codes "byf" and "svw") and Spreewerk Metallfabrik (codes "cyq" and "cvq"). Most of the Walther and Mauser's pistols have a two digt date staped together with the company code (e.g. "ac 43", "byf 44") - on the other hand Spreewerk's pistols never had a date. In addition, numbers marked on the slide, frame and barrel should match.

So, more pictures!

The P38 is CYQ marked and has all matching numbers of 6480, so Spreewerk and its holster is dated 44.

I will post photos in the morning and thank you for the help thus far.

Check if there is a letter suffix (most common) or a preffix.
Based on that we can date your pistol. If there is no letter at all, then it would be one of the first 10,000 pistols made by Spreewerk, which are the best examples made for that company and commands somewhat higher prices.

I think this could be common. I have one chipped just like that.

That holster looks russian new.

The P.38 has the late war "cog" hammer; so it is not among the first Spreewerke guns.
