Any old gun nuts in here?

And when I say 'old', I don't mean someone my age.....

I have an old family heirloom rifle. It was made by George Kopp in the 1800's. Have found web links showing some examples of his rifles, but I have not been able to find out what it might be worth. (No, I'm not looking to sell it. Want the info for my insurance list.) Below is a photo of an example I found on the web - not an exact match, but pretty close. Any idea as to the range in value?

I am a member of the International Society of Appraisers and specialize in the appraisal of firearms and militaria. I will tell you this. The appraisal of "Kentucky" rifles of this variety is a very specialized area that would require research. The difference due to makers, condition alterations etc. over the years can have a profound effect upon the fair market values of these types of rifles.

Given his credentials, Jim knows far more than me so I won't add much to what he has already said, but to give you an idea regarding the range of values he is referring to look at the prices realized for these two links. They are both from the same auction and look reasonably similar to the one you posted.

Judging a Pennsylvania type rifle from a picture of another one is not as simple as judging something like a Luger where the one produced before and the one right after are identical except for any wear they might have. The Pennsylvania rifles were made to the individual specifications of the owner.
If your rifle is somewhat like the rifle shown, and in percussion rather than flintlock, I would say it could be anywhere from $1000 to $2500 depending on the actual rifle's condition and trim.

That was my understanding - no two alike. I used that photo because the type of wood is the same.

Mine has G.KOPP stamped on the top of the barrel, and the side plate has G.GOULCHER on it. Also has a hunter with 3 flying ducks on the plate.

I'll try and take some photos......
