You have a nice example of a 1st generation Colt SAA. Is there anything in particular you want to know about it?

The Colt SAA's are nice old guns; I picked up one myself "out of the woodwork" not too long ago. While not TR military related, mine is US martially marked.

That's a really nice example with the original length barrel. Do the serial numbers still match?

Everything matches, less the cylinder. My understanding is that this particular gun is what is known as a "New York Militia" issue and that cylinder mis-matches are very common among this variant. The unit markings on the left grip and the added lanyard loop are, I am informed, characteristic of the NY Militia guns.

I just checked in Kopek's book "A Study of the Colt Single Action Army revolver" and according to his records 970 Colt's were shipped to the New York Militia in 3 separate shipments between 1890 and 1895. There were also 2 additional "parts" shipments. I suspect that how yours avoided being turned into an "Artillery Model".
BTW: This is a great book for the SAA fan.

I would suggest not shooting this last production run pistol with smokeless powder....Colt didnt suggest using smokeless powder until after ser#192,000, So , regardless there may have only been 120 or so of the 38s...but this guns production run with the 4 date 2 row, is the least valueable of them all, but still not shabby, as few can say they have one this nice. Id shoot it if i were you . But make sure you do your homework prior to. Might make you have to go buy an italian ssa, just to shoot for fun after you get used to it. They also have competition shooting with guns like this.(of course you may want to use a modern version ) Nice gun.
