Winchester Model 1897 Riot Gun Spare Barrel Help

Hey guys, need some help. I came accross a spare 20" Winchester Model 1897 barrel in a military web spare barrel carrier( and it's marked as such on it), the barrel serial number is in the 487,000 range, 90%+ finish, CYL marked on the rear left. Whats a good price for one? Thanks for the help in advance!

Well you have an extremely rare item there and that makes setting a price difficult at best...I would love to see it. Whats it worth? 200? 500? I would say that someone with an advanced Winchester collection would be your best bet for a buyer.

Thanks! I did end up getting it, the serial number is 487745 and the carrier is marked cover, spare barrel , M9-D30674. I'll post pics later.

That serial number is from somewhere around 1910, and the drawing numbers, such as your D-30674, didn't come into use until the early to mid 1930's and continued into late WWII. Looks like you have a Model 1897 barrel and hanger from an earlier gun with a later spare barrel cover.

You have a WWII spare barrel case for a machine gun barrel, and the front end off a Model 97 shotgun. Somewhere there is a Model 97 receiver with that same serial number.

An internet search turned this up.

This is the front end off of a civilian M1897 Winchester shotgun, correct?

Yes, and in fact it looks like what Winchester called their "Brush Gun" made for bird shooters. The Brush Gun had a cylinder bore barrel that was 26 inches long. Changing out everything on a barrel to get another choke was pretty involved, so what most did was to buy another complete barrel assembly in another choke.

Thanks John, after finally having some time to go thru my books I came to the same conclusion, bummer but hey it's still a pretty good barrel and with everything else I got with it It'll work out. Thanks!

Just wondering: was the barrel/upper assembly sold as being military?

Oh well . . . . we all win some/loose some. If the WWI-era M1911 mag pouches in the background of your photo came in the deal, it looks like you did pick up a couple of nice military items.

Hey Al, yes they came with it, there are 20 of them total, all mint unissued, 12 WW1 mills and russell dated 1918, 2 WW2 British made dated 43, 5 Avery 1943 single button and one 47 dated white single button pouch. Not to bad.
