The US Military stopped procuring Thompson SMGs in 1942. However they were in use right up until the end of the War on both battle fronts and subsequentially used in Korea as well to a limited degree. Therefore the serial # will be of little use in determining when any specific Thompson was used. The limited number of postwar Thompsons made by Auto Ordnance are distinguisable by the finish and the lack of military markings.

In fact the last US military order for Thompson SMG was placed in February, 1944.

You are correct. I mixed up the date when the M1A1 was introduced as a replacement for the 1928A1 with the last date of production. Thompsons were in fact produced into 1944.
