The laufschützer for the MG53 was a direct copy of the German model, but which German model was it a copy of?

I've recently acquired a pile of them and I'm going to strip and repaint them for reenactment use, but want to make sure I'm not painting them panzer grey if the originals only came in dunkelgelb
