    Help with S&W .38 Breakfront

    I wanted to offer this nice pistol on the estnd. I belive it is a 3rd generation SW .38 ser# 186,xxx would I be correct? Thanks

      I believe that is a 2nd Model .38 S&W Safety Hammerless, but check that out to be sure.

        Looks like a S&W 38 Safety 4th model. Serial numbers for the 4th model are 116xxx-220xxx. There is some overlap with the 5th model, but those are around 216xxx range. Your serial number definately puts it as a 4th model.

        FYI, the serial numbering for the 2nd model stopped at around 42xxx. The second model also does not have the "38 S&W CTG" on the left side barrel, and it only has a single knurled thumb piece, where as the 4th model has two knurled side knobs on the topstrap.

          Agree the serial # puts it into the 4th Model range. I would also add that your example appears to be in very nice condition. Many of these nickel plated revolvers exhibit severe flaking to the nickel.
