    P 38 Wood grips?

I became the (proud, lucky, insert good adjective) owner of this Walther AC 42 (stack) h series pistol today. (From my father via his cousin- I guess I'm some kind of "Mother" to get this as a gift on Mother's Day!) It is Heer marked (Eagle/359 & Eagle/Swastika). My question is about the grips. They are wood and are both marked by a "K" carved into the inside of each grip. All of the Walthers I've seen have the bakelite grips. It came with 1 magazine with no markings whatever- does this mean that it is a post war replacement? And what about the grips? Thanks!

    Hi Zach,

The grips are post war but look like nice ones. That is a very fine P38 and it should eventually be restored with original WWII period grips.

Thanks John! How much would replacement grips cost (about)?

        Hi Zach,

These are something I've never looked for so I haven't a clue. You could get lucky and find them cheap, but I'd be prepared to pay handsomely, perhaps around $100 for a pair? Others here can answer to this better than I. Regardless, well worth doing.

            post-war and expensive

have an identical pair on mine and as I recall they cost about sixty bucks eleven or twelve years ago.

If you'd like to sell these wood grips, I'd be interested in them.

                In my opinion

                Hi Zach,

Nice looking P-38 you won on the Mother´s Day! Congratulations.

In my humble opinion, it deserves an original pair of grips, as the others stated. It will surely increase its value as a collectable gun . However I must to admit that they made a great job with those wood grips.

If I were you, I would check with our co-moderator Robert Zimkas, if he has some of those original grips available for sale. He always has some interesting things!

                Regards,

                Douglas.

There are a few on ebay right now, both the reddish-brown bakelite and the black metal...

Thanks a lot for your replies. The wooden grips are very nice. They fit together and with the butt perfectly and feel good in the hand, although by now we all know they were added after the war. John, you were in the ballpark as eBay is at $75. and $57. for 2 sets each in their last day.

The wood grips for the P-38/P-1 are stocked by Numrich Gun Parts. The part# is 541100 and sale for $29.95. I added a set to my postwar P-1 and they fit perfect.

                          Regards Chris

Thanks for the responses. I got a new black, hard leather holster for it from ebay today for $26 and will continue to watch for a deal on original grips. Here's a picture of the other side of the P.38:
