    Mp 40 question

    Hi.

    A question:

I have heard that some of the MP 40 was painted, pehaps from the factory.

I have seen a picture of a Mp40,where there was paint leftovers.

Have anyone heard of that before?

If you have a serialnumber from a Mp40,is there somewhere you can find some information about pruduktionyear?

    Thanks!

The only MP40's that I have heard were painted were those for camouflage purpose and was done in the field, most likely with white paint for snow camo.
Every MP40 came out from the factory blued or parkerized late war.
If any has black paint leftovers could be that of a treatment postwar made by the russians to prevent from rusting when in storage.

Are you sure these were paint remnants?
On some early MP40's the bluing was quite intensive and with the wear it began to look a little bit like paint peel off.

In my opinion it seems black paint over the original blueing, and paint could have been applied by the russians post war. Nice gun!

About 50 years ago I saw a tan painted MP 38 at a gunshow.
It had brown bakelight as I recall.
Looked neat, but at $125 it was way out of my range.
Dunno why it could not have been"field" applied.

most likely repainted post war. most of the mp 34 (O) part kits are found gloss black over the original bluing , by who ?? and have also seen the camo. painted weapons, including a very nice camoed mg 34 = in a photo with 2 paras manning it.(tried to save the photo = looked terrible). jeff

                  This has one also barkelit.

But i can understsand, that there is no chance, that it could have painted during the war!

The serialnumber is 7702 i think. Does anyone knows,is that a early or late produktionsnumber?

The weapon itself is midwar, made by Erma in 1943
To check if the serial number is early or late we would need to know the letter that goes after the serial number: a,b,c,d...the closer to the letter a the earlier the weapon was made in 1943
